“Rumba Boyshorts” by California-based lingerie company Honeydew

Since every frock designer and her poodle diversified into the knicker-and-bra market approximately five years ago, there has not been a lot to report in the way of undie-innovation.  Some are cute. Some aren’t. Some are nice. Lots are scratchy. That’s about the B-cup size of it.

But, these knickers - “Rumba Boyshorts” by California-based lingerie company Honeydew - are a revelation. A retro-revelation to be precise; similar to baby’s bloomers, lady’s tennis knickers, and an innovation that blossomed into a rampant schoolgirl fad sometime in the early 1970s known as “witches britches”.

All three traded on the inherent loveliness - the springy, spidery prettiness - of thickly bunched tiers of common lace. Honeydew’s version (pictured) is not meant to be practical: the 3D nature of the lace excludes use under smooth clothing, and their long, dropped crotch provides a clue to how high on the buttocks they’re meant to be worn.
